Carmen — Arènes de Nîmes

Arènes de Nîmes

Thinking opera at the scale of the monument.

Bringing a lyric work into dialogue with the architecture of the Arènes de Nîmes. Developed around the Carmen project, this study explores how to set a contemporary stage within a monument whose geometry, perspectives and presence impose their own rhythm.

The work led by Martin Dorai combines site analysis, 3D surveys, modelling and staging research. The frontal layout organises the relationship between stage, orchestra and tiers. Stage volumes, circulation and audience sightlines are studied together to give a concrete form to the artistic ambition.

Bringing the monument into the staging.

Image and light open up another dimension: supporting the narrative, transforming the perception of materials and bringing the monument into the staging. An approach in which production direction links intention, space and the conditions for making it happen.

A Strategic Immersive Architecture® approach: starting from the site, its history and its constraints to build an experience in which architecture becomes part of the narrative.
